Ipu Hekes are made from gourds, and as a product of nature each gourd
is a little different and few gourds are flawless. A normal gourd will
often have unique colors, patterns, blemishes and weathering acquired during
its growth and development. The interior of a normal gourd can vary from
thin to spongy to thick.
But sometimes Mother Nature (in the form of insects, growth anomalies, or
weather) gives gourds an unacceptable number of flaws, or a less than desirable
shape or shell. If they still have a good sound, we'll do the "cosmetics"
to make them at least as strong as our normal drums, and sometimes stronger.
These discounted drums are perfect for class, practice or rehearsal, and we try
to mask the improvements as much as possible so that even on stage the
corrections may be unnoticeable.
Discounts range from 5 to 50%, based on the severity of the flaw.
